Coldplay’s ‘Moon Music’ Debuts at No. 1 with Largest U.K. Opening Since Adele

Coldplay has once again reached new heights, claiming their 10th consecutive No. 1 album on the U.K. Official Albums Chart with their latest release, Moon Music.

Not only did Moon Music debut in the top position, but it also amassed 237,000 chart units in its first week. This remarkable achievement marks the largest opening for a British act in three years, since Adele’s 30 was released in 2021.

With this significant milestone, Coldplay joins the elite ranks of British music royalty, tying with legends ABBA, Michael Jackson, and Queen, all of whom have also achieved 10 No. 1 albums on the U.K. Official Albums Chart.

Coldplay’s streak of chart-topping albums began with their 2000 debut Parachutes and includes hits like A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), Mylo Xyloto (2011), and their most recent work, Music of the Spheres (2021). In addition to being Coldplay’s latest No. 1, Moon Music is also the fastest-selling album of 2024, with 209,000 units sold through physical and digital purchases.

The album’s impressive sales numbers put it just behind Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, which sold 270,000 units earlier this year, but Coldplay’s performance positions them well ahead of other British artists.

In the rest of the Top 10, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet made a steady ascent, rising one spot to No. 2. Public Service Broadcasting achieved their third Top 10 album with The Last Flight, debuting at No. 3, while James Bay’s Changes All The Time entered at No. 4, marking his fourth Top 5 album.

Further down, Cutouts by The Smile, featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, debuted at No. 7. Meanwhile, Alison Moyet’s Key entered the chart at No. 8, marking her highest-charting album in over a decade. Additionally, Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Volume II made a return to the Top 40 at No. 21 after its 30th-anniversary reissue.Coldplay’s unwavering dominance on the charts, now extending over two decades, shows no signs of waning. With Moon Music further cementing their legacy, the band continues to make a lasting impact on the U.K. music scene.
